THE SLIT-LAMP BIOMICROSCOPE


This instrument is composed of two main 
components.  The slit-lamp which is the light 
source and the controls to modify the size, 
shape, direction, color and intensity of the light.

The second main component is the biomicroscope
-the microscope used to view the eye.  The 
magnification can be varied.  

The slit-lamp and biomicroscope can be moved in 
relation to the patient using the joy stick for 
focusing and bringing structures into view.  The 
remaining portions of the instrument are the 
headrest to hold the patient still and the 
adjustable table or stand instrument for holding the 
slit-lamp biomicroscope to position it before the patient.

The accurate term for the instrument is the slit-lamp biomicroscope, however, by convention each individual term is used to refer to the whole instrument.
